My story? A former collegiate runner back from the dead with unfinished business and sights set on qualifing for the 2028 U.S. Olympic trials.
This is my journey to the Trials.
This is my journey to the Trials.
Hello, I’m derek.
And I’m a Runner,
AGAIN.
After a 13-year hiatus from competitive running, I've rediscovered a passion I thought I'd left behind. A Division II cross-country scholarship athlete turned 'retired' runner, I swore I'd never lace up again. But a spontaneous challenge with my college teammates to run a sub-3 hour marathon reignited the fire. I went from the couch to a 2:33 marathon in five months. Now, I'm chasing a new, audacious goal: qualifying for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Follow along as I navigate the daily challenges of elite running at age 36.

JANUARY 11, 2026
Chevron Houston Marathon
Houston, TX
The focus has shifted. After a year of rebuilding and a strong comeback to racing, I'm now locked into a dedicated training cycle for the Houston Marathon in January. My goal is clear: to break 2:22 at the marathon distance.
The journey to the Olympic Trials continues.
